The Good Queen

Strictly speaking, I’d prefer that Canada didn’t have a Queen and instead became a parliamentary republic. I just thought I’d get that out of the way.

I believe that the Queen of Canada has been a very good queen. But what do I mean when I say that? I suppose I mean that she hasn’t interfered with the democratic will of Canadians. The role of the Queen has changed as much as her relationship with the kingdoms and dominions that she rules over.

Centuries ago a monarch’s power and fortune was directly related to how much land they controlled. This is why we always had wars. But that changed for many reasons in recent time. The Queen of Canada would not benefit if Canada invaded the United States of America. She would not get more money or more prestige. The ability of the monarch to benefit by their country has been severly diminished. I think this is one of the reasons that the remaining monarchs in developed nations don’t act like the greedy people their ancestors or predecessors were.

The only way that a monarch can interfere with a country these days is to go against democracy. That would only happen if the monarch was ideologically bound to something they considered more important than democracy itself.

I also believe that if the monarch were ever to use the powers that are left to her, she would suddenly find herself with even less powers the next time around.
